We used Bubblegum Beads with a 2.00mm plus Hole

The pen unscrew from the top so you can add the beads in the color of your choice. Typical 3 of the 20mm bubblegum beads fit the rod perfectly. Some rods may be slightly shorter or larger we have no control over that. I found 1 rod a little shorter that the others out of 20 plus pens, the difference it is easy to adjust with adding of a bead spacer or a slightly smaller bead. Screw the cap back on and you are ready to go. They make excellent gifts..
